On a rocky beach in the southwest of Ireland, the body of a wealthy racehorse owner Johnny O'Reilly has been discovered.  In a town like Dingle, everyone knows a little something about everyone else.  But dig a bit deeper, and there's always much more to find.  And when Detective Inspector Cormac O'Brien is dispatched out of Killarney to lead the murder inquiry, he's determined to unearth every last buried secret.

Dimpna Wilde hasn't been home in years.  But faced with a triple bombshell -- her mother is rumored to have been in a relationship with Johnny, her father's dementia is escalating, and her brother is avoiding her calls -- Dimpna moves back to Dingle to clear her family of suspicion.  And as she takes over the family practice, she finds herself in a race with the detective inspector to uncover the dark, twisting truth behind the murder, no matter how close to home it strikes...

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

Dr. Dimpna Wilde is a veterinarian just like her father.  She's had tragedy in her life, including the fact that her husband killed himself after a public scandal.  But when she learns that in her hometown of Dingle, where she hasn't been for decades, there's been a murder of a man she knows well and that one of her parents is suspected of the killing, she packs up her menagerie of pets and goes home.

What she finds distresses her -- her father is in the stages of dementia and his practice is falling apart, and her mother now reads the Tarot to locals.  Her brother won't return her calls, and her son Ben is telling her he's in Spain with a new girlfriend.  But the worst thing is she's come fact-to-face with the son of the dead man -- she's hated him forever and now his mother is throwing the accusations on her family.  Dimpna decides to do the only thing she can:  find the murderer before the new inspector in town makes a terrible mistake.  But what will the cost be to her and her loved ones?...

This is the first book in a new series by Ms. O'Connor.  As I love her other series, I wanted to read this, even though it was listed as a "dark cozy."  It is not.  Although foul language doesn't offend me, there is quite a bit of it in this book which exempts it from being a true cozy.  Just throwing that out there, folks.

The plot is rather convoluted, and every character (save the inspector and the other garda) has a connection, tenuous or not, to each other.  Each little thread pulls them closer together, and it gives out terrible secrets, lies, and betrayals.  Dimpna's latest tragedy connects to one that occurred twenty-seven years ago, and it becomes the focus of the book.  It is rather sad, terribly horrid, and there are more secrets to come.

I had a difficult time reading this book.  Mainly because it was rather boring and halfway through, I nearly didn't finish it.  But I wanted to find the outcome, so I plodded forward.  Unfortunately, this book didn't enchant nor enthrall me whatsoever.  Everything seemed to come down to one thing, and the terrible part is that I couldn't connect with any of the characters.  Dimpna has practically no personality, and we aren't given much to go on regarding the others.    While I will give Ms. O'Connor the benefit of the doubt as to creating new characters, I hope that everything goes better in the next book.

I won a copy of this book but it in no way influenced my review.

Beth Rivers is still in Alaska.  The unidentified man who kidnapped her in her home of St. Louis hasn't been found yet, so she's not ready to go back.

But as October comes to a close, Benedict is feeling more and more like her new home.  Beth has been working on herself.  She's managed to get back to writing, and she's enjoying these beautiful months between summer and winter in Alaska.

Then, everything in Benedict changes after a mudslide exposes a world that had been hidden for years.  Two mud-covered, silent girls appear, and a secret trapper's house is found in the woods.  The biggest surprise, though, is a dead and frozen woman's body in the trapper's shed.  No one knows who she is, but the man who runs the mercantile, Randy, seems to be in the middle of all the mysteries.

Unable to escape her journalistic roots, Beth is determined to answer the questions that keep arising:  Are the mysterious girls and the frozen body connected?  Can Randy possibly be involved?  And -- most importantly -- can she solve this mystery before the cold wind sweeping over the town and the townspeople descends for good?

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

Beth Rivers is hiding.  Born and raised in Missouri, she's had a successful career as a writer of thrillers.  She just never knew that she'd be in her own nightmare of own.  Kidnapped from her St. Louis home and held for three days in a van before her escape, she carries more than the scar on her head as a reminder.  She carries scars inside her.  And the fear that her unknown captor will still locate her again.  The only person who knows her secret is the sheriff, Gril.

She lives in a halfway house, now empty of other guests at the moment, and runs the town's newspaper, the Petition, and writes her books in a small shed not far from her home.  Her nearest neighbor is the library, run by Orin, another transplant with a past.

When she learns from Randy, who runs the mercantile, that he heard strange growling noises behind his cabin -- away from town -- she wonders what it could be.  But the next day, the same noises are heard outside her shed, along with knocking.  She opens the door warily to two mud-covered young girls, and takes them to Viola, her landlady.

The sheriff doesn't know who they are, and neither does anyone else...until a Tlingit man comes forward and claims them as his daughters.  But Beth has questions.  Questions which escalate when the body of a frozen woman is found in a shed, and the shed is behind Randy's home, and turns out to belong to a trapper.

Now there's a whole lot of questions that need to be answered, but no one seems to have any.  Also, when Beth receives a call from the Detective on her own case regarding the identity of her kidnapper, it ties back farther than she could ever have imagined.  Now Beth needs to find out what's going on in Benedict, Alaska; and if her kidnapper has any clues to where she is...

This book is the first in the series that I've read by this author, but there's enough background that you can determine what happened in the first book, although I would recommend that you read it first.  I enjoyed the character of Beth, even if she did take chances I don't think she should have, and the other characters grow on you as well throughout the book.

We are given enough description of Benedict to know it's remote, it's beautiful, and it's cold.  Far enough from Juneau that you need to reach it by plane.  Far from civilization, but peopled with souls that have decided this is enough in their lives.  Beth, however, is there for another reason: to escape the horror that was her past experience, and hope to put herself back together again.  She doesn't want anyone to know the truth, in case her kidnapper finds out where she is.  Fair enough.

The book has a lot of twists and turns, and threads that keep tangling up and reaching in other directions, pulling at one place and yanking at another, until they all wind up together in a mystery that is difficult to put down.  The ending puts everything together, at least until...Beth's story continues.  There is no ending,  While I liked this book very much, I absolutely abhor cliffhangers, and unfortunately, the ending left me cold.

I received this book from Amazon and the publisher but this in no way influenced my review.

My father is dead, and Will Deacon did it.

Melody is desperate to uncover what Will is hiding in the basement.  A ploy to unveil his sinister plans, leaves Melody finding herself in danger in the final part of this tantalizing series.

What's worse than the imminent danger is what she finds out.  The secrets of the Deacon mansion come to an unexpected close.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

In this final installment of the Disappearance series, Melody is left on the island with three men who are taking care of her.  But she needs to find her way back to the Deacon mansion to find out the truth of what happened to her father.  She knows he is more than likely dead, but she wants to know why.  She also believes Will Deacon is the culprit, and blames herself for falling for him.

Will Melody find the answers she is looking for?  Will she find out what happened to her father?  And more importantly, will she find out what is going on with the Deacon brothers and what they are trying to hide?  Or will this be the final journey for Melody herself?

As a conclusion to the six-part story, we have a short but gripping ending.  Melody is determined to get the answers she's been searching for, and we go with her, wondering what lies ahead and if all her questions will be answered.  Since this is a short installment, I will not give any more information than I already have so as not to spoil it for others who have not read it, but I will recommend this entire series to those who have not.  You will enjoy it.

Deserted and destitute of both friend and foe Melody camps out on the lonely island.  She decides to search the island for any sign of life in part five of this adventure-filled mystery thriller.

What she finds hidden in the dark woods is more than what she bargained for.  A ploy is underway and she must uncover who her real friends are.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

In part five of this episodic thriller, Melody has been drugged and left on an island to fend for herself.  What she doesn't expect is to find clues that might lead her to what she's been searching for all along: her father.  When she least expects it, something occurs that makes her realize none of anything she's done has been an accident, and she might be the next victim...

I have enjoyed this series all along and reading it has kept me on the edge of my seat.  This installment is no different.  Melody is now on an island, wondering what is going to happen next, and how she's going to get herself back to the mainland.  Watching Melody follow the trail of her missing father is intriguing, and around every corner there very might be a friend or a foe.  But how to tell which is which?  And what is Melody going to do next?  Unfortunately, I have to wait for the next in the series, but I hope that it comes soon, since I'm pretty well invested in the story!  Recommended.

As if things cannot get much worse, Melody learns her enemies are gaining ground on her.  Her latest discovery in part four of this suspenseful series, leaves Melody arrested with desire for adventure.

When she is warned by an unlikely source, Melody fails to heed the counsel that could have stopped her life reaching a dangerous point of no return.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

In part four of this episodic mystery/thriller, we find Melody becoming more involved with the Deacons than she wants to be.  She tries to enlist the help of the local constabulary, but the officer doesn't take her seriously, and she wonders if she'll ever find her father.  When one of the Deacons sends concern her way, she wonders what she will do next.  Especially when she discovers something she wishes she hadn't...

But in a turn of events, there is someone who enters her life and may have the answers she needs -- or may not.  Melody might be getting closer to finding the answers, or she might be getting closer to losing her own life...

I have read this series from the beginning, and I have to say that this episode is the most riveting one yet.  It has plenty of suspense, and leaves you hankering for the answers almost as much as Melody.  While I would definitely like to read the next in the series right away, unfortunately I will have to wait until the next.  Highly recommended.

Melody is determined to find her father and goes against her better judgment and the warnings of the townsfolk to locate him.  In Book Two of this enthralling series, she takes the clue her father left in Deacon Mansion and cautiously begins working for the Deacons.

As she grows close to Rebecca and Will, one fateful event threatens her entire gambit to discover the truth of what happened to her father.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

Melody is on a Scottish island determined to find out where her father is -- and if he is still alive.  She has gotten a job at Deacon Mansion as a tutor to a young Scottish girl who has lost both her parents.  In posing as a woman who is writing a book instead of the archaeologist that she really is, this is her cover.
Melody has found one clue from her father that he was here, on the island, and she is determined to find out where he is now.

She inadvertently learns from her student Rebecca that her former tutor was a Mr. Sanders, and with the information she gleans Melody is sure that he is her father.  But no one she questions seems to know where he is and how he left the island, since he disappeared one night and there is now no trace of him at atll.

When Melody starts to put together the pieces, she discovers that people she thought were friends might not be so, and someone might know what happened to her father, aka Mr. Sanders.  But when she starts hunting for clues, Melody just might be too close to the truth and discovers that the danger is all too real...

This is the second of three installments in the Disappearance Mystery, and it continues from the first.  I will tell you that you need to read the first in order to understand why Melody is in Scotland and why she is looking for her father.

This is quite suspenseful and keeps you reading it in one sitting, hopeful that you might find the answers yourself.  It also gives you a hint of what is to come in the third.  I know for myself that I want to know how it all comes about and am waiting impatiently for the next in the series.  The plot is very good and is written well, and I am waiting impatiently for the next in the series.  Recommended.

This is not good.  This is really not good.

With no time to waste, Agent Tina James must rush to find the chaplain.  A slew of clues leave her deadlocked in her search.  But one key piece of evidence culminates the case to a deadly finish in this spectacular finale to the series.

Find out if Agent James can save her school, her love and her life.  This jaw-dropping conclusion will reveal it all.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

In the finale to the series, Agent Tina James is on the trail of a devious killer who has taken the lives of young girls and has no qualms about doing it again.  The murderer, knowing that she is onto them, sets a trap that might end Agent James' career and life.

But Tina must first find the kidnapped chaplain.  Or was he?  All she knows is Nick has disappeared, and she's in a rush to find him before he's killed.  She's sure he's not involved, but where could he be?  She needs to use all her wits and follow clues if she's to find him alive...

As I mentioned above, this is the finale to the Boarding Case Mysteries, and it ends the series nicely, with questions answered and a murderer apprehended (as we know they must be, after all).  What follows is a solid ending to the series, and one worth reading.  I enjoyed it highly and recommend it to others.

Agent Tina James' life transformation proves to be the courageous step she needed to solve the case.  Now she must locate her friend, the chaplain, and figure out if he is Ella's blackmailer.  Time is of the essence and lives are at stake in part four of this addictive series.

One piece of evidence reveals it all -- a woman in Wyoming.  Tina races to find her and learns a morbid family secret that has placed her and those she loves in grave danger.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

In part four of this riveting series, Tina is getting better and determined to find Nick, the school's chaplain who has disappeared.  While she has no clues where he's gone, she receives a cryptic message on her phone that leads her to a mysterious woman in rural Wyoming that may give her a vital clue.  It's Tina's only clue, to be truthful, and she's determined to find out the truth about the girls who died and who drove them to their deaths...

I've been following this tale from the beginning, and honestly, it's the first time I've read a serial mystery.  While it's difficult to wait for the next installment, I have no intention of giving it up, as in each installment we learn a little bit more about Tina and her past life, and what brought her to Newport from Boston.  It's like meeting a person and each time you see them you learn a little bit more about their life.  The mystery is fascinating, and I, too, want to know the answers.  Once learning about the fates of the girls at the school, you want to know the truth of the matter, and the only way to do this is to immerse yourself in a story that gives you small clues in each reading.  I enjoy the series highly, and hope the next installment is soon.  Recommended.

Jessy's journey to discover the truth behind Harlan and his work is finally coming to an end.  Through each case file, he has revealed more about himself, but now, Jessy's final case will force her into the darkest territory she has ever known.  A psychiatric hospital hides a sinister secret, and revealing it may bring Jessy face to face with Harlan himself, but at what cost?

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

Jessy and her husband are just days away from being moved to the witness relocation program, staying in a hotel with two police officers guarding them.  But she's decided that her life and that of her husband shouldn't be changed, so she wants to find the people that have caused the problem in the first place.

Finding a killer might be the easy part, but finding Harlan, the man who started it all, is going to be a different story.  With the help of her friend Mia, she sets out to find Harlan, but in doing so she might also end her life permanently...

I found this short story intriguing, even though unfortunately I've never read any of the others in the series and had no idea who anyone was (my loss!).  Still, it had enough suspense and moments to draw you into the story easily.  It was easy enough to follow everything Jessy did, and her stealth at getting away from the police and finding what she needed was enough to keep you reading.  The writing was very good, and while there is sadness, there is also enticement about the beginning of something new for others.

All in all, this tale is well worth reading, but I suggest you go back and start with the beginning story; you won't be disappointed and you might find a new series to keep focused on.  Recommended.

Another day, another dead woman in Ellison's study.  Only this one claimed to be Mrs. Anarchy Jones as Ellison juggles mothers, daughter, unhappy wives, and near-miss murder attempted, one thing is clear -- someone will go to any lengths to hide the truth.  Can Ellison and Anarchy catch a killer before the body count rises?  Or will Ellison be the next corpse in the study?

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

Ellison Russell is a wealthy, widowed artist with a teenage daughter who lives in upper class Kansas City, Missouri in 1975.  She's getting ready to go on a trip to Italy with her beau, homicide detective Anarchy Jones, and make something permanent of their relationship.  Luggage is packed, her housekeeper Aggie is staying at her home to care for her daughter, and all she needs is to head to the airport.  Or not.  After running an errand, she arrives home and Aggie isn't too happy: it seems there's a woman waiting for her in her late husband's study, and she's identified herself as Mrs. Anarchy Jones.

Stomach drops.  Head spins.  And all she has to do is open the door and find out what's going on.  Unfortunately, what's going on is that Ellison has another dead body on her hands.  A woman that she's never seen before.  When she calls Anarchy, it turns out he's never seen her before, either.  So who is the dead woman?  Why would she lie about herself?  And what did she come here for?  Coffee.  Ellison needs coffee, now...

Just when Ellison thought she had her life in the right place it seems she doesn't.  Identifying the woman is easy, since everything in her purse is spilled out on the floor.  Monica Alexander.  The name means nothing to either of them, but a woman is dead, she's in Ellison's home, and now they have the task of figuring out why...

Again unfortunately, things aren't going to be easy.  Not only do they need to figure this out, Ellison has other obligations at hand: since she's not going to Italy, the next day suddenly got full:  she's agreed to play a fourth at bridge, and her father wants her to go golfing with him.  Golfing with her father means her mother isn't happy with her, and her father needs to intervene.  Little does Ellison know that these two innocuous events are going to change things, in more ways than one.

But even with this, things couldn't get worse, right?  Wrong.  Anarchy's mother has come unannounced for a visit, and he's not happy.  Especially when she wants to meet Ellison.  All Ellison can think is this woman can't meet her mother.  Not ever...

So what we have is basically what is just another normal day for Ellison Russell: artist, mother, widow, dead body magnet.  In fact,  the only thing that's going right is the fact that she can always depend on Mr. Coffee to keep her sane throughout the day.  (Not that I blame her; without coffee, I wouldn't even be moving.  We're very good friends, too).

Monica Alexander, however, is another puzzle Ellison needs answers for.  What she discovers is that Monica is the friend of friends, and she lives in another town altogether.  So why was she here?  And what did she want from Ellison?  It doesn't take long for Ellison to figure that part out, but the story doesn't end there.  What follows is a spider's web of secrets that keeps growing and lies that get entangled within one another as she looks for a killer.  Which she shouldn't be doing in the first place, especially when there's an attempt on her life.  But Ellison is made of stronger stuff, and she wants answers.  After all, it was her home (not that it's the first time, but still...).

When Ellison discovers that Monica's trips to Kansas City were tied to people she knows, she has to decide what to do with her knowledge, since these are her friends and there's more at stake than a dead woman's justice.  What Ellison finally uncovers is darker than she ever imagined, and sadder than anything she's ever known.  Finding the truth could also put her relationship with Anarchy in peril, but Ellison knows what she needs to do is right.

I have been following this series from the beginning, so when I read of Ellison it's almost as if I'm a voyeur to her life, following her every move (although I'm glad I'm not the one finding the bodies) and it's probably one of the best series out there.  Ms. Mulhern has a way of bringing Ellison and the others to life, pulling them right off the pages.  These are characters that are animated and breathing on the pages, and I love being a part of their world, even if only for a fraction of time.

Going back to life in the 1970s when there was no Internet and cell phones, when human interaction was at a premium and there was a lot more actual face-to-face contact made things different than they are now, and more on a personal level.  Ellison's world consists of people visiting instead of texting, talking with people to get information instead of using the Internet, and in many ways, it was a brighter one, bringing people closer together.

In the end, finding the killer might have been a bit of a surprise, yet the motive and reasons why show us what desperation can do, and it was rather sad in a way.  But the surprises don't end there, and give us a reason to look forward to the next book.  I will say that if you've never read this series, please don't start with this book.  Go back to the very first one -- The Deep End -- and you won't be disappointed; in fact, you'll probably be addicted.  Highly recommended.

When lawyer-turned-farmer Megan Sawyer witnesses a seemingly innocent scene between three strangers, she learns they're headed to the von Tressler memorial -- the talk of scenic Winsome, Pennsylvania.  The von Tressler family has more money than manners.  The newcomers recently bought coveted hilltop property to build their oversized Greek Revival, tempting away local contractors and snubbing the locals.

Soon one of those three strangers goes missing and another is murdered, her body found at Washington Acres -- Megan's family farm.  The local police turn to Megan, as she was one of the last people to have seen them both.

With her family's safety at sake, Megan must pick her way through the von Tressler's sordid family secrets and colorful personalities.  She discovers that the malice that's befallen Winsome has roots in the past, and she'll need to dig deep to weed truth from lies and innocence from guilt, or the body count will grow even higher.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

Megan Sawyer is an ex-attorney who left her practice and moved to Winsome, Pennsylvania, to help her grandmother run her family's farm, Washington Acres.  She's since then expanded her organic business and is renovating the home next door to become an inn for her farm.

While purchasing potting soil for her grandmother Bibi, she overhears a conversation between three women, one of them crying uncontrollably.  It appears they're going to the funeral of David von Tressler, who built a monstrous home nearby; since he and his wife pretty much kept away from the locals, Megan has no plans to attend.  But when the women get a flat tire and she's asked to take the youngest of the three, Claire, who was also the crying one, to the funeral, she agrees.  After dropping her off at the door, Megan thinks that will be the last of it.

But when Claire never arrived at the funeral, Megan is accused of having something to do with her disappearance.  Then, when another sister is murdered and found at the home she's renovating, Megan's right in the middle of a murder investigation.  Now, to clear her name, she needs to find the missing woman and find answers as to why the murdered one was left at her farm.  But in doing so, Megan might just be the next victim...

I have read the previous books in this series, and have never been disappointed in any of them.  This one is no less intriguing than the others.  Megan, who is just trying to make a life for herself and Bibi, is finding it harder to do when they're interrupted with a murder victim being found next door.  The situation escalates when Megan learns that there's something else afoot, and it also has to do with her, although she has no idea what.  Knowing this, it neither arms nor comforts her as she tries to put the pieces together.

There's also the fact that Megan is struggling with her feelings for Denver and being worried about her aging grandmother's health.  While she's struggling with these two things as well, she needs to put them aside while she tries to figure out the problems with the death of the woman and the von Tresslers, who are giving no help at all.

Megan, while being warned to stay out of the investigation, knows she can't do that, so starts asking questions on her own.  I love the fact that she doesn't go about accusing people of murder, instead gathering information, sharing those facts with police chief Bobby King, and trying to make sense of everything.

What ensues is a convoluted tale of murder, greed, lies, and revenge.  It is done masterfully, with Ms. Tyson taking each thread and pulling them slowly together to reveal the tightly woven end result that gives us an ending no one could have seen coming.  Finding the killer was both unanticipated and captivating in the fact that it was surprising in itself.  While I had my suspicions, I was gratified to see that I was at least partly right.

It also gives us something to look forward to in the next book (which wouldn't have mattered to me anyway since this is one of my favorite series and I have no intention of deserting it), and the fact that this book was so riveting is testament to the fact that Ms. Tyson is one of the most talented writers out there.  I eagerly await the next in the series.  Highly recommended.

Private investigators Liz Talbot and Nate Andrews thought they'd put Darius Baker's troubles to rest -- then his recently discovered son ropes him into a hemp farm investment with his college buddies.  When a beloved Charleston professor -- and potential investor -- is murdered, Liz and Nate discover Darius keeps the PIs on speed dial.

A shocking number of people had reasons to want the genteel, bowtie wearing, tea-drinking professor dead.  Was it one of his many girlfriends or a disgruntled student?  Or perhaps Murray was killed because his failure to invest meant the hemp farm trio's dreams were going up in smoke?

Though Liz's long-dead best friend, Colleen, warns her the stakes are far higher than Liz imagines, she is hellbent on finding the no-good killer among the bevy of suspects.  But will the price of justice be more than Liz can bear?

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

Liz Talbot and Nate Andrews are married private investigators.  They've recently helped Darius Baker out of a tough spot, and now he wants them to help his son Brantley who is mixed up in a murder investigation.  When his attorneys retain them to find evidence to prove Brantley innocent, they go to work.

Liz, however, isn't so sure that Brantley's innocent.  Darius only recently discovered that he had a son, and it's because Brantley's adoptive parents were killed -- along with every other member of his family -- in a suspicious fire, when none of their smoke alarms signaled anything.  Even though he was never charged, she still wonders if he had anything to do with it.  But being the professional she is, she's going to help him.

It seems that Brantley, along with two buddies, have invested in a hemp farm and one of them had a college professor uncle that raised him.  Tyler, from all appearances, loved his uncle and would never hurt him.  But Murray was definitely poisoned, and before anyone could find evidence on his security cameras, his house was demolished in an explosion.  Now Tyler is the main suspect, and Liz and Nate are on the trail of a killer -- someone who's killed before and has no problem doing it again...

I have always loved this series and this book isn't any different.  It brings me back to Stella Maris Island, just outside Charleston, South Carolina, where Liz and her family lives.  We're once again drawn into their lives, along with Liz's teenage friend Colleen, who died when she was seventeen and is guardian of the island.  But Colleen's main mission is to protect the island from people who would ruin it, and Liz is only one step in that direction.  With only Liz and Nate able to see her, it makes things difficult when she's around.

Liz and Nate have to don disguises to find the information they're looking for, and that includes attending Murray's funeral, where they encounter three women who all insist they were his girlfriend.  Finding out that Murray had more layers to him than they thought, they also discover that his current girlfriend Annalise may have been closer to him than anyone.  But someone wanted him out of the way, enough to destroy any evidence there might have been.  And with what they find out, Annalise might be another target unless they can surreptitiously help her, too.

Among the investigation keeping them busy, Liz discovers that her friend Sonny Ravenel, is heading the police investigation, and he knows something's up with her brother Blake, police chief of Stella Maris.  Blake and his girlfriend Poppy have just taken a much-needed vacation, but Sonny refuses to discuss it.  Liz, with her natural curiosity, born of the fact of her job, is wondering what's up.  But she doesn't have time to worry about it when her mother calls and tells her to find out what's going on with her father -- he's having packages delivered to the house and won't tell her what they are.  So Liz, naturally, now has to delve into that somehow while working the murder case.

What follows is a tale of murder, greed, larceny, and lies.  Liz and Nate discover more than they expected, and it brings things out into the open that have been hidden without a clue to the truth.  There is more to the story, and more people involved than they first expected,  It sets forth a chain of events that could cost Liz things she values most; and brings a sadness along with great joy for her.

There is also a hilarious scene between her mother, father, and a horrendous surprise by her father that while funny as can be, almost sets her mother's teeth on edge and when the rest of the family finds out, they're all on her side.  Just that one scene alone is worth reading the book.

Since I would love to say more but refuse to give away any major spoilers, I must end this review with what I have already said.  When the murderer is found out and everything comes together, it is more than a satisfying story, and it makes it difficult to wait for the next in the series.  Highly recommended.

Davis Way smells T-R-O-U-B-L-E when she's fired from half of her part-time job at the Bellisimo Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi.  The quarter-time job she's left with is lulling her to sleep, exactly what she's doing when Birdy James, centenarian director of the casino's Lost and Found department, disappears.  With five million dollars.

Davis just can't help believing Birdy didn't do it, if no no other reason, she's too old to spend it.  If Davis doesn't find the little old lady and the money fast, she'll lose what's left of her job, at which point, there goes her Belissimo everything.

What she needs is a good luck charm.  What she gets is her home invaded by hard-headed women, a soft-hearted little man, and major carpet troubles, the combination of which sends Davis's already suspicious mind into overdrive, and that lands her between a jailhouse rock and a very hard place.

A little less conversation and a lot more action are called for if Davis has any chance of saving herself, her marriage, her job, and the heartbreak hotel she calls home.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

Davis Way Cole lives on the twenty-ninth floor of the Bellissimo Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi.  This is due to the fact that she's the wife of Bradley, General Manager, and mother to a pair of three-year-old twin grils.  She's also part of a three-person security team for the resort, along with Fantasy and Baylor (just Baylor).  When her husband puts her in charge for the week he's going to be out of town - along with owner Richard Sanders and Davis's boss No Hair (forever), she agrees, thinking, what could go wrong?

Aside from the fact that five million dollars has completely disappeared?  And there's an Elvis convention filling the rooms and the town?  And the woman who runs the Lost and Found - where the money was left - is also gone?  Not much...unless you count Davis's mother, her ex-ex-mother-in-law, a missing cashier, a howling cat, frisky dog, and a smell so rancid it will put you in a coma...

When Davis and Fantasy are on the hunt for the missing money (and Birdy, the old, old lady who runs the Lost and Found) they don't want to tell Baylor.  Because he'll squeal and tell their boss and anyone else who will listen.  So the two women try everything to get the money back, but all that occurs is more problems..and more.  And what ensues is complete chaos, Davis trying to find a moment to regroup and not go insane, and her mother spending all her time cooking everything she can. (because cooking is love).

The casino is a madhouse, there are Elvii (or Elvises, depending on who's arguing the point) everywhere, and Davis is frantic to put her hands on the money and keep her family safe.  She's also discovering that what seems like an accident wasn't, but when she finds this out it may be too late for all of them -- in more ways than one.

It's a wild roller coaster ride from one end of the casino to another, and one floor to another, moving tomato plants, gawd-awful smells, and several missing persons needing to be located.  Meanwhile, she's babysitting a woman who's nearly a hundred, and trying to stay out of the sight of her mother and ex-ex-mother-in-law (a long, long story best saved for another time, and who shouldn't even be there in the first place, according to Davis).

Ms. Archer takes us on this crazy journey from the first page, and keeps us moving through the story like we're trying to find our way out of a house of mirrors at a carnival.  Without help.  With people trying to kill us.  It's fascinating, humorous, suspenseful, and even a little maddening (but that might just be Bea Crawford).  If you blink, you'll miss something.

It's an old saying: follow the money.  But in this case it's true - if you can find the money; which Davis can't.  So there's that.  But it starts with that thread and leads into a whole lot more, until you have a regular tapestry in front of you that she needs to unravel.  And it's the unraveling that's the most fun you'll ever have.  Highly recommended.

When one of Chief Pete Adams' first murder convictions is overturned, he and County Detective Wayne Baronich are assigned to reinvestigate the case.  As new theories about the murder surface, Pete begins to question not only the original suspect's guild, but his own investigative skills from the days when he first took over the Vance Township Police Department.

Did Pete put his personal feelings ahead of his quest for justice and lock up an innocent man?  Or is the defendant as devious as Pete first believed?

Meanwhile, Zoe Chamber, Monongahela County's new chief deputy coroner, struggles with the turmoil of two mysterious deaths -- including someone close to her heart -- as she tries to master her new job and plan her upcoming wedding.

But her investigation soon links to Pete's case, making Zoe the target of a killer determined to keep the truth from getting out.  Can Zoe see the danger in time, and get to the church for her wedding...alive?

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

Zoe Chambers's life is changing: she's planning her wedding to Chief Pete Adams, sheriff of Vance Township, Pennsylvania.  She's also left her EMT position to accept one as the deputy coroner, working with Franklin Marshall, who's waiting for a kidney transplant.  On top of that, she's helping move everything from Pete's house to her farm, and her mother, Kimberly, is arriving soon for the wedding - something she'd really rather not to have to deal with.  Her life is busy and she's feeling overwhelmed...

But then a fatality is brought into the morgue, and she knows the young woman, Gina Wagner.  Gina apparently died suddenly with no indications of illness; so the forensic pathologist is doing an autopsy with both Zoe and Franklin looking on.  But suddenly Franklin falls ill, and they call paramedics, believing it to be his diabetes causing it.  Now, with Franklin out of the picture, Zoe has to take on every responsibility.

Pete is having his own problems: an old case from nine years ago is being reopened: Dustin Landis was accused and convicted of killing his wife Elizabeth even though he insists he's innocent.  It seems there is new information that might prove to be true, even if Pete doesn't believe it.  So now he and County Detective Wayne Baronick have to re-investigate the information to see if something was missed.

Then something terrible happens to someone dear to Zoe, and she's thrust into trying to determine if Gina's death had anything to do with Pete's case; while he's starting to wonder if his first instincts - that Dustin was innocent - may have been right, or if the man is guilty as everyone thought.  When there's another death and it looks like it's connected to the one from nine years ago, Pete and Zoe are racing to find out what that connection is before someone else gets killed....

I have to tell you that I absolutely devour this series.  From the first paragraph you are pulled into the story and follow Zoe and Pete as they race against time to find a killer and keep people alive.  While Zoe's life is being turned upside down, she can't allow her personal life to affect her professional one, and you can feel the turmoil within her as she struggles with her new duties while trying to leave her paramedic life behind.  I root for Zoe all the way, and want her to succeed and be the person she was meant to -- she's not only strong, but smart, logical, and doesn't back down from people who try to threaten her.  She's also caring and gentle with those who mean something to her; and this combination makes her someone you want the best for.

The mystery, as always, is a string of threads that starts out easy enough to see, but then they start weaving in and out of each other until they're pulled tight together and the colors blur against each other; leaving Pete and Zoe to slowly unravel them one by one until they see the tapestry underneath that makes up what they've been looking for all along.  While we wonder, as Pete does, if Dustin is guilty as sin, when Pete discovered a secret he'd held; or if Dustin was indeed framed for his wife's murder.

When the threads lead to someone unexpected, they think they've found the answer.  Or have they?  When we do discover the answers, we can finally let out the breath we've been holding throughout the book - and what a journey it was.  Exhilarating, like being on a roller coaster that wouldn't stop (and I dislike roller coasters, so that's saying something).

Yet the ending gives us promise of something else, and it feels like we are coming home.  Not only satisfying, but endearing and looking eagerly forward to the next in the series.  Highly recommended.

Penelope and her Red Carpet Catering crew find themselves transported to a different world when they arrive on their newest movie set in rural Indiana.  Surrounded by prickly locals, a nervous director out to prove herself, and a vast forest with secrets all its own, Penelope feels more homesick for the big city than ever before.  When she finds their host, owner of Indiana's newest culinary hotspot, dead of an apparent suicide, Penelope works to uncover the darker truths boiling beneath the surface of his seemingly perfect life.  Asked to help keep the late chef's restaurant afloat, Penelope is fried trying to juggle two kitchens and a ravenous cast and crew.  When the chef's suicide turns out to be murder, and the restaurant is vandalized in the middle of the night, Penelope must find out who is behind it all before she's the next one on the chopping block.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

Penelope Sutherland owns Red Carpet Catering, and she and her crew are in Indiana on a movie shoot, along with her best friend and housemate actress Arlena Madison.  While filming a version of Turn of the Screw, Penelope enters the kitchen early one morning in preparation of making breakfast for everyone, enters the walk-in freezer and finds the hanging body of Jordan Foster -- the chef and owner of the inn where they are staying.

After calling the police, Penelope notices things that shouldn't be -- like where are Jordan's boots, and the necklace he always wore.  Jordan also owned Festa restaurant, and soon after his death, she's asked by his widow to take over as chef at the restaurant while they search for a replacement.  So Penelope is now tasked with two things - catering on the set and running a restaurant - while she's there, and even though it's keeping her running, she's also not sure the chef committed suicide, and neither is the director of the movie, Jennifer, who was Jordan's longtime friend.

The sheriff insists that things like this don't happen in his small town, but when the kitchen is vandalized early one morning, the evidence points to a local man named Bailey whom Penelope thinks is guilty for everything due to his past record.  But Penelope soon learns that what's on the surface might not be the truth, and only in digging for it can you uncover the mud beneath, and that mud might just get her suffocated out of everything...

This is the fourth book in the series and I have to say that I have enjoyed them all.  It's different in the fact that the protagonist is a chef and a traveling caterer, to boot.  She lives with Arlena as her personal chef, and also she and her crew travel to various movie sites around the world.  It's an interesting concept, and one I've enjoyed highly.

The mystery starts out simply enough -- with a chef who's suspected of committing suicide -- but his childhood friend refuses to believe it.  That's enough to pique Penelope's curiosity, and she soon discovers other things that aren't adding up: the missing boots, missing wine, and a mysterious name keeps popping up on papers she sees.  She also discovers that five teens have gone missing in the last five years in this sleepy town, and she wonders if everything isn't connected, and after exploring a bit, she thinks she might be right.

Helping the story along is an appearance once again by Arlena's charismatic father, actor Randall Madison, her brother Max, and Penelope's cop boyfriend, Joey, who's managed to take some time off to fly out to be with her.  While the story is clearly centered on Penelope's private investigation, there are some light-hearted moments as well which add to the tale.

The mystery is written extremely well, and the actions surrounding the movie set take second place in the story, just as it is meant to do.  There are plenty of false trails that lead you in first one direction and then another, and it is only when you are nearing what Penelope discovers that you also discover the truth.  While I was suspicious of one particular character (and rightly so); another unexpected one was added to the mix.  It gave a surprise that was both unexpected and rather disheartening to know one could be so unfeeling.

When the murder is solved and the killer is revealed, it comes together beautifully like a dish of paella, everything blending nicely and a feeling of satisfaction at the end.  We are also given a hint of things to come, and I will read the next in the series as soon as I can.  Highly recommended.

Springtime.  Love is in the air.  So is murder.

When Ellison Russell, reluctant finder of bodies, chairs a gala in conjunction with the museum's Chinese funerary exhibit, she expects disaster.  So, she's not remotely surprised when a body turns up.

Ellison is willing to leave the investigation to the police till an attempt is made on her life.

Now she's juggling evading a killer, her aunt's overly-amorous beau, her dog's new love interest, and Mother's displeasure.

With bodies piling up, if Ellison's not careful, staying alive might be impossible.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

Ellison Russell is a widow who lives in Kansas City, MO with her teenage daughter Grace.  It's the 70's, long before cell phones and the Internet, when people actually had to either call someone on a landline or speak with them face-to-face.  Her life should be going smoothly, but in Ellison's life, it never does...

She's chairing a gala and is hoping everything will go well.  In Ellison's mind, that means not finding a dead body.  Because, you see, Ellison's life hasn't gone smoothly since she found the body of her late husband.  Since then, she's been tripping over them like other people trip over loose carpets.  So her fears are justified...and of course, during the gala, while trying to sneak in a quiet moment with her beau, homicide detective Anarchy Jones, she touches a hand...that's attached to a very dead person.

The person turns out to be someone she's acquainted with, and the woman is definitely dead.  But because this is so often a regular thing, Ellison promises she'll give Anarchy a guest list if he only allows people to leave and she can get through one evening without a complete catastrophe.  After informing the museum's director and the victim's husband, they do just that.

But the next morning the news is all over town, and that means Ellison's formidable mother descends on her demanding answers.  Which she doesn't have.  Which she never has.  Still, with her Aunt Sis in town -- and seeing a man her mother approves of -- at least she'll have a bit of respite.  She thinks.  Until, of course, there's another body.  And more questions.  Now Ellison wonders what the two dead people had in common, and why they were killed.  Because she's positive there's a link.  She just hopes she figures it out before the killer figures out what she's doing...

Once again we visit Ellison Russell in 1975, where the thing most important to her is her Mr. Coffee, with whom she has regular conversations (not that I blame her; I depend on my Keurig to keep me sane during the day).  She's trying to juggle her life with Grace, her new relationship with Anarchy (of which her mother doesn't approve); and her dog Max, who's decided he's in love with a dog who's been terrorizing the neighborhood.

In between the falling bodies, there are humorous moments, one of which occurs in the middle of the night when Sis's boyfriend is trying to help Ellison corner the wayward dog and which instead they corner each other -- in a way which could be misconstrued by others -- and it's this lightness and Ellison's bright wit which keeps the book from being too dark.  Because it's her inner thoughts that are the funniest, and keep the book moving along at a rapid pace.

I've read and loved every single one of these books, having followed Ellison from finding her first body and meeting Anarchy, and watching her grow (along with watching Grace's transition from snarky teen to a blossoming young woman who manages to get in a few zingers of her own now and then) has been a delight in my life.  Ms. Mulhern manages to create characters that leap off the page, and once you've read one of the Country Club Murders, you're hooked.  For those that are starting with this book, go back to the first.  You won't regret the ride.

When the killer is discovered, we realize that the clues were there throughout, but when someone chooses to kill, it's usually for a reason as old as time itself; although it's never easy to understand.  The plot is creative indeed, and the threads weave together easily, bringing the story to a close that is both satisfying and leaves us hungry for the next one.  Highly recommended.

When long-buried human remains are found at an old deserted mill in Jackson Creek, North Carolina, newspaper publisher Ava Logan uncovers more than a cold case.  With a bullet still lodged in the skull, the only certainty is the victim died a violent death.  As Sheriff Grayson Ridge and an anthropologist work to identify the remains, Ava sets out to discover where love, betrayal, and family ties entwine.  Determined to uncover the identity of the victim, Ava unwittingly sets off a chain reaction of consequences no one in Jackson Creek is prepared for.  Decades-old secrets surface and threaten to destroy those closest to her.  Exposing family truths will compromise the ones she loves -- not exposing them will jeopardize her relationship with Sheriff Grayson Ridge.  What will Ava do for love?  How far will a murderer go to bury the truth?  How long will they all live the lies?

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

Ava Logan is a newspaper publisher in small-town Jackson Creek, North Carolina.  She's involved with Sheriff Grayson Ridge, and so far, they've managed to work together and keep things on an even keel between them as far as it goes.  When she's working on a feature article of a local man who's a rabbit hunter, one of his dogs comes across human bones located near an old mill that closed down.  She notifies Grayson, and he, in turn, notifies an anthropologist to see if they can determine how long the bones have been there.

But she also finds a couple of key pieces of evidence - the person has been shot in the head, and there's a class ring nearby with the initials KJD and MAM engraved in it.  Now, while Grayson is looking to identify the body, so is Ava -- but from a different perspective.  She wants to find out whose initials these are.  But when Ava starts digging into the mystery, she doesn't realize it's going to come closer to home than she imagines -- and could possibly damage or destroy the lives of those she cares for...

I have read the previous two Ava Logan mysteries and enjoyed them both, and I have to say that this one is just as good.  It's not a 'feel good' mystery; nor is it meant to be.  It digs down into those deep places where some people want to forget, and others never want to go again.  It brings forth the damages of life, and people who were hurt and permanently scarred along the way -- in more ways than one.  In other words, it's what happens in real life.  It's raw, painful, and even at times, a bit uplifting.

We are given in this book to know more about the local "granny woman" Mary McCarter and her slow-witted son Keeper, two characters I've liked from books before.  Keeper is the best of us; he has no guile and no evil within him, and he's joyful to others.  But we also learn more about the woman who basically raised Ava, too, and we see how Ava and Grayson's relationship has grown.

For Ava, she's a strong woman who never walks into situations that could cause her to be in potential danger.  She also doesn't set out to hurt others in her line of work, and her newspaper isn't a rag that publishes lies and rumors.  She's made a future for herself and her kids, and is smart while still having her own insecurities.

When we get closer to discovering the murderer, it was fairly easy for me to figure out who it was (but then again, I read a lot of mysteries), but the reasons behind it stunned even me.  It seemed so worthless and cruel, and some things one may never recover from.  This is indeed a book that will stay with you for awhile after being read, and I look forward to the next in the series.  Highly recommended.

Misty Dawn, a former Hollywood psychic to the stars, knows the dark and sometimes glamorous streets of Los Angeles are full of secrets, broken promises, and dashed hopes.

When a young woman comes to her door because she's lost her engagement ring and is afraid to tell her fiancé (the son of one of the world's biggest cosmetics empires), Misty senses it's no accident.

Together Misty Dawn and her psychic charge, Wilson Thorne, must not only sneak behind the walls of the Conroy Estate (aka The House That Vanity Built), but go beyond the veil where the luminaries have laid plans to seek revenge.

Murder, lust, and a quest for a fountain of youth are hidden inside a family's secret, one that threatens to upend the young woman's life, and quite possibly, Misty's as well.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

Misty Dawn is a Hollywood psychic (retired) who lives with Wilson Thorne, a Hollywood set designer (deceased) in his home.  He hasn't been able to 'pass over' yet, so they've come to an understanding between them to keep peace.

When two young women approach her because one of them, Amy, has lost her engagement ring and is afraid to tell her fiancé, son of a man who has built a wealthy cosmetics empire, she's both devastated and desperate.  Misty manages to calm her down and convince her that the ring isn't far and will be returned to her.

But she also senses danger for Amy and tells her to contact her whenever she feels it necessary.  But when it leads to murder, Misty is drawn into a web of deceit, lies, malice, anger, and above all, evil - she also discovers that there are two ghosts living in The House That Vanity Built - and if Misty doesn't find a way to help the young woman -- and soon -- her own life could be in danger as well...

This is the second book in the series and I am glad to say that it is just as good as the first.  What begins as a case of a lost ring very shortly turns into murder, and Misty is reluctantly drawn into the case, but soon finds she is threatened to leave it alone -- which she won't do, since she's grown fond of Amy and doesn't want to see anything happen to her.  She's learned (with a little help from Wilson) that if she doesn't get Amy away soon, it might be too late for her.

But it's not going to be easy, since the police have warned her away more than once, and even when she comes to them when she's followed home, they tell her it's probably just a case of road rage.  So Misty is determined to find out who's following her, and who killed the victim since she's positive they have the wrong person.

It's a very good mystery, and we are taken into a a murderer's tangled web of artifice and cunning that attempts to eliminate anyone who gets in their way.  In the end, when the murderer is discovered, we are shown just how easy it is to hide the face of evil; and how difficult it is to expose them.  I look forward to the next in the series.  Highly recommended.
