⭐⭐⭐⭐

David Thomson has been called "the greatest living writer on the movies."  Here is a career capstone of sorts -- a one-volume history of film and screens as illuminating and provocative as his classic Biographical Dictionary of Film.  In tracing the progress from the Lumiere Brothers to the Coens, Thomson glories in the great movies, but admits to increasing unease over what the medium has done to us -- promoting fantasy, misleading models of sexual identity, the cult of authority, power, and happy endings.

This revisionist history is as alert to technology and business as it is to art and fun in tracing our pursuit of the lifelike instead of life.  By turns trenchant, lyrical, and comic, Thomson uncovers our addition to voyeurism and villainy, and a habit of passivity that has betrayed our poitical and cultural identity.  In a survey that reaches from Metropolis to Rear Window to Anora, this will redirect ideas about film everywhere.  As The New York Times has put it, "Thomson proves anew that he is irreplaceable."

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

First off, I will say that I have read several of Mr. Thomson's books and own quite a few of them (I just haven't gotten to them all!)  I find that he is an erudite writer who knows his subject well.  When I decided to read this book, I was curious about the content, loving film as I do.  I will say that I love classic movies, own thousands of them, and watch anything from the silents up until they started to get boring (I won't divulge when, as that is my own business and my own opinion).  I will, however, say that I detest modern movies and don't watch them; I prefer to spend my time with Humphrey Bogart, Fred Astaire (I have a love affair with Fred Astaire), and Barbara Stanwyck.  If you don't know who these actors are, you are missing out on something great.

Mr. Thomson does mention earlier (and some now) actors in this book, but it is mainly centered on directors.  He begins with the 1800's and start of movie-making, which wasn't all that easy to do.  Even then, people were enchanted by the five- or ten-minute films they were allowed to watch.  Since then, we have come miles from what film started out as.

I have seen most of the films that are mentioned in this book, so I am familiar with the subject matter.  I will add that this book would be essential for any college film major.  You will be surprised at the depth of information inside.  It took me a while to read, as I wanted to ponder what was being said by the author.  Also, I have a habit (good or bad, I haven't figured out) of watching several of the films mentioned in any book having to do with the entertainment industry.  It helps me understand more, see more, and enjoy more.

There are oodles (an odd word!) of directors found within this book, and he gives an honest opinion on their style and facets of directing.  He also gives us background information, which is well-received by the reader.  Personally, I do enjoy Howard Hawks, Mervyn LeRoy, and even Spielberg's films.  All very good.  We also agree that Fred Astaire was almost inhuman in the way he danced  -- it was very sexy and more than musical; his air of grace and effortless moves were almost ethereal.

He speaks of directors from the earliest days, and doesn't pull punches when he does so.  You learn of their failures, foibles, and successes.  While Birth of a Nation is a long film (silent), it's interesting to view.  Others, such as The Godfather, are classics that will stay forever.

The book is broken down into sections film history; from subject to director to film.  There are analyses of some; reviews of others; and critiques of directorial styles.  It is interesting to see the differences between Orson Welles and later directors, who have somewhat leaned upon his style (but you need to find the ones I am speaking of).

The only thing that bothered me -- and it may not bother others -- were the influx of political opinion,  I was disappointed in Mr. Thomson, because, and I will say this freely, a book about film has no place for politics.  I am fatigued by those who give us wonderful books and then feel the need to infuse their own politics.  While I will not say how, but it is as if you are watching a comedy film and the ending is science fiction.  You would leave scratching your head and wondering where the sci-fi came from, why it was added, and what happened to the original plot.  Badly done, in my view.

Other than that, I can say that this is a very good book, and I am glad that I was given the opportunity to read it.  I do enjoy Mr. Thomson's books; he is a terrific writer and critic, and this would be a good addition to anyone's entertainment library.  Recommended.

I was given a copy of this book from the publisher but this in no way influenced my review.

It's time to debunk all the myths about foods we want to eat.  150 Healthiest Foods on Earth, Revised Edition delivers facts on foods; no spin, no agenda.  In this newly updated nutrition reference guide, acclaimed nutritionist and bestselling author Johnny Bowdon debunks traditional food myths, saves the reputations of foods long suffering bad publicity, and provides just the facts -- so you can make good, health-conscious decisions about which foods you and your family should eat.  You'    ll learn the latest research on many of your favorite foods, as well as some surprising new findings on the health benefits of foods you may have been avoiding unnecessarily.  Did you know that according to research:
Saturated fat does not cause heart disease?
Full-fat dairy may protect against diabetes?
There is no need to avoid meat if it is one hundred percent grass fed?
There is a major difference between farmed salmon and wild salmon?

No food provides everything.  But real food -- whole food with minimal processing -- contains a virtual pharmacy of nutrients, phytochemicals, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and healthful fats, all of which keep you alive and thriving.  Learn how easy it is to find "real" food and discover what more than a dozen well-known nutrition experts say are their "top ten" healthiest foods on earth.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

I liked the title of this book, and I am always on the lookout for healthy, good-tasting food.  Restaurants have flavorful dishes; but a lot of it is buried in sauces and fatty ingredients, so I choose carefully.  I was pleased to know that a lot of the food I keep at home is on this list.  At any given time, my refrigerator is filled with fruits and vegetables; some cheeses, and nitrate-free meats.  I am very careful about what I eat.

But this book added so much more to what I already knew.  Being a person who really doesn't like avocado (sorry, I just don't), unless it is in guacamole (I don't know why about that, either); I was looking for alternatives to healthy fats and this book provided that as well.

In the end, this has more than enough information on food that you should be able to decide what you want and keep a full refrigerator and pantry without giving up flavor.  Recommended.

Mindset for Seniors: A 4-in-1 Guide to Motivation, Mobility, Flexibility, and Aging Gracefully is the ultimate companion for those ready to embrace aging with confidence, vitality, and purpose.  This transformative guide integrates fitness, nutrition, and mindset strategies to help you unlock your full potential and redefine what it means to grow older.

Whether you're looking to overcome the fear of change, set achievable goals, or adopt a healthier lifestyle, this book offers practical advice and step-by-step solutions to help you thrive.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

I read this book because who, as they age, aren't looking for ways to help stay healthy?  I will say that this is indeed a comprehensive guide to that end, but I found some of it repetitive and I had difficulty in finishing it.  Not that I think it isn't helpful; indeed it is; it is that I feel the information within might not be attuned to every senior out there.  I, for one, would not use AI to help me in any way.  I feel that I would rather do things on my own.

Also, like every other 'healthy diet' book, the author goes on to tell you to eat kale, spinach, quinoa; in other words, everything everyone else tells you.  (I would rather eat baby greens and tabouli instead; can't stand those three listed above).  As you can tell, I do have personal issues with this book.

At the last, I think it is tailored towards people who already have the mobility to go through these things.  I know people who cannot move easily because of chronic pain; yet I did not find anything in the book on how to deal with this (I may have missed it altogether).

I am not saying that this is a bad book.  On the contrary, it is written well and I can see how this book might help older people to 'get moving' and live a better life.  In that respect it does well.  There are chapters on exercising and balancing your life, which are very good, which is why I give it four stars.  It's very good in the information given; I just feel that there was something lacking.  However, the author has done a nice job and I would recommend this to others.

Did you know you can have a garden that's equal parts food source and wildlife haven?  In Grow Now, Emily Murphy shares easy-to-follow principles for regenerative gardening that foster biodiversity and improve soil health.  She also shows how every single yard mirrors and connects to the greater ecosystem around us.

No-dig growing, composting and mulching smartly, and planting a variety of edible perennials that attract bees and butterflies are all common-sense techniques everyone can use to grow positive change.  You'll also find detailed advice on increasing your nature quotient, choosing plants that cycle more carbon back into the soil, selecting a broader variety of vegetables and fruits to improve overall soil fertility, rethinking space devoted to lawns, and adding companion plants for pollinators to rewild any plot of land.  Exquisitely photographed and filled with helpful lists and sidebars, Grow Now is an actionable, hopeful, and joyful roadmap for growing our way to individual climate contributions.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

This book is filled with helpful information -- if you live where there is a lot of rain.  There is no information on irrigation for states that don't.  I live in one of those states, and what good would it do to plant all these things if they're going to die?  I can't afford to put in a high-priced irrigation system, and it would have been nice to have information on what plants don't need tons of water to exist.

Try growing blueberries in the desert.  You can't.  We already have desert plants and flowers, so there isn't anything new here that would give information on growing herbs that I didn't already have.  Unfortunately, this book just wasn't what I was looking for, while it does have interesting information, if you have time to use it; and you will need a lot of time to grow the plants she mentions.

I was given a copy of this book from Amazon but this in no way influenced my review.

Why do I feel anxious all the time?  When will I find 'the one'?  What is my purpose in this life?  We're all on a never-ending quest for guidance, answers, and solutions.  You may spend hours completing personality tests, reading self-help books, or visiting a tarot reader who will give you a glimpse of your fate.  It's only natural that you want to know yourself better, make sense of the world around you, and seek out the tools to help you overcome challenges.  That's the main reason why behavioral astrology exists -- to answer questions about you.

Astrology is often thought of as a form of entertainment.  In fact, many people never go beyond their daily horoscopes and obsessively checking compatibility with their crush.  This surface knowledge doesn't begin to cover the astrological wisdom of the stars shared across lifetimes of study and practice.  When you take the time to go deeper into your natal chart, you will start to uncover:
  • The planetary influence in your life
  • The karmic past you didn't know you had
  • and how celestial bodies can impact your patterns of behavior
With this renewed self-awareness, you can begin to understand what you need for a life of love, success, and prosperity.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

First off, let me state that I have a healthy respect for astrology.  I began to study it myself when I was a teen, and have charted for myself as well as others.  Therefore, I am always open to learning more, and I enjoy reading new publications that might give insight now and then.  Unfortunately, in this book, I did not find that.

While this book is great for telling people how things work -- the Sun, Moon, Aspects, etc.; and it explains them very well, I was torn because it gave some information that I found erroneous.  The sun signs that this book regards as ideal for relationships for myself are all wrong.  In fact, the sun sign that the author thinks will run from me I have been with for nearly 30 years, and married to for nearly twenty.  Explain that.  The ones he thinks I would work with?  Nope.  Those relationships never worked.  So you see, you cannot go by sun sign.  There are so many more considerations, which were never gone into.

However, again, this book does a good job of giving information regarding the explanation of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Aspects, Transitions, etc.; and that is information that you need to know.  I honestly just think that before you take all this information to heart you need to forget the last part of the book (that gives you compatibilities) and rather work with your own heart and head.  Don't live by the page.

This book just didn't show me anything I didn't already know, and while it is a fairly good reference book, I can't see using it myself; but it is an excellent place to start for others.

I received an advance copy of this book through Reading Deals and Amazon but this in no way influenced my review.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

I would say that this book would be excellent for a beginning artist.  I bought this book because I hoped that it would have at least color wheels -- which it does not.  It is perfectly fine to tell us about complementary colors, but without the wheels, for some it might be a tad difficult to discern.

The author is basically telling you things like 'blue is good for seascapes' and a lot of the book is on shadowing and shading.  These are things that any experienced artist already knows, and unfortunately, there wasn't anything in this book that I hadn't already figured out myself.

There are plenty of colorful pictures on every page, so you will have no problem with that.  The author does give full descriptions of what she's trying to convey, so there is also that.  But I must say that I was disappointed in her artwork.  Yes, it was abstract, but none of it appealed to me; so I would have a difficult time with listening to what she says if I don't appreciate the artwork.  Others might love her style; and this book does give you information on things such as texture, etc.

All in all, this is a very nice book that is put together well, and would be useful to many people.  It is a primer on colors and usage, but personally I found it uninteresting.

  • IMPROVE decision making
  • FLOURISH in the workplace
  • DISCOVER your best love matches
  • CULTIVATE more rewarding friendships
  • MAP OUT your future
  • DETERMINE your own fate
✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

I have been studying astrology for decades, so I pretty much have it figured out.  But as a book with all the tools you might need, this one is a good choice.  It gives you the information to get started, and explains pretty well what everything is.  Not only does it give basic information, but it expresses everything in a facile way, it explains it easily enough for anyone to follow.

The book goes further into adding things you may not have thought of: transits and returns , but they are also a part of a fully explored chart.  While it does not give you the tools to create a chart, there are plenty of places on the internet where you can find one for free, if you have all of your birth information (date, plate, time).  From there, you can pretty much navigate anything the book has to offer.

Learning your chart can be educational, but I have to say that while I have studied astrology extensively, I do not allow it to control my life.  It's an informational tool, but only you can determine what path your life will take.  Saying that, I feel that this book would be a welcome addition to anyone's astrological library, and a good reference to have.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

I have taken the time to read this book a couple of times, mainly because I found the content interesting; but I also wanted to see how it applied to my own life.  As a disclaimer, I have studied Astrology for several decades and dam pretty much aware of how it applies to my own life.

This book is pretty much spot-on with that.  It gives full information on each sign (ruling planet, modality, element, etc.) which might not be important to some, but I do think it is vital information to help one understand oneself better,  The book then goes on to personal health profile, areas of health focus, etc.  Then it focuses on the changes of the planets and how it affects you personally.

I will say that this is a guide, not a bible.  It doesn't mean that you have to follow it religiously; but it does give some very good information that one can put to use in your own life.  I, for one, am glad that I found this book and will be very happy to add it to my collection.

I ordered this book because I have found myself living a life with heavy stress.  Without going into deep detail, let's just say that there was an operation with every complication imaginable that I am still recovering from; and once my doctor told my husband and myself that there was to be no stress of any kind in my life, I knew I had to find something to help me stay relaxed.

While I was skeptical, I found that the exercises in this book do truly help me.  I've practiced most of them, and found the simplest to work the best.  There are also mini-questionnaires that you can read and respond to, if you like.  While I've never been fond of questionnaires of any kind, the one that struck me was writing a journal without using judgmental words.  One finds out quickly how we judge things in our lives and even ourselves.  I have learned to tread softly in my life, to relax more, and to stay focused on just the day.

While there is nothing such as a 'miracle cure' to anything, I believe that this book will help others to relax and let go of stress in their life.  Highly recommended.
