It's Christmastime, and farmer Lucy Resnick is living the life she's always dreamed of.  When she's not selling her jams, soaps, and mistletoe bundles at the Buttercup Christmas market, she's enjoying cozy evenings by the fire with her knitting group -- or her handsome veterinarian boyfriend Tobias Brandt.  But less than a week before Christmas, a pall falls over the festive atmosphere when local man Randy Stone turns up with a knife in his back...and a sprig of mistletoe in his hair.

Local sheriff Rooster Kocurek, never the brightest bulb on the string, is convinced it's an open-and-shut case...murder by jealous wife -- but Lucy suspects otherwise.  She soon discovers that Randy's life was more tangled than last year's Christmas lights...and that unless she wraps up the case fast, there might be more than one funeral this holiday season,

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

Lucy Resnick lost her newspaper job as an investigative reporter when the newspaper downsized.  Fortunately, she was able to purchase her late grandmother's farm and has been happily making it a home along with animals, vegetables, and all the other trappings of a happy life.  It's the holidays, and she's selling homemade products at the annual Buttercup Christmas Market to get her through the winter.

She's approached by her friend Mandy, whose parents own a restaurant, to help her prove her sister Isabella innocent of murdering her husband.  The problem is, Isabella was seen at the restaurant just before her husband Randy was found dead in the parking lot.  When Lucy starts her investigation, she finds that Randy had a mistress -- and may have even been fooling around with other women as well.

But when there's a disappearance, Lucy fears someone may be in trouble, and she's determined to find that person.  Will it lead her to the killer?  Or will it be worse, and the killer finds Lucy first...

This is the fourth book in the series, and I have read the others, so I am familiar with most of the characters.  I read this one because it takes place at Christmas, and I want to 'read the holiday,' as it were,  I truly enjoyed this book and watching Lucy use her investigative skills to get to the truth of the murder.

Because I read a lot of mysteries, I knew what was going on at the ranch and why (I will say no more but you should read the book) but I will say that it was interesting enough for me to want to figure out who the killer might be, and I did so just around the same time as Lucy.  While it was intriguing to watch her put the clues together, the climax itself was worth reading as well.

In the end we discover the reason for the murder, which was easy enough for most to decipher, and as I've said before, you can never know what goes on in the mind of a murderer.  Very sad indeed.  But the ending was bright, and even Christmas-y, which fits right in with the season.  Recommended.

It's Christmastime on Dewberry Farm, and homesteader Lucy Resnick is busy bundling mistletoe branches and cedar swags for the Buttercup Christmas Market when a neighbor's houseguest keels right over next to her peach orchard.  Was it a stray bullet from a hunter that took him out?  Or did a guest at the fancy ranch next door decide to scratch somebody off his or her Christmas list?  It's up to Lucy to unwrap the mystery...before the holiday killer strikes again.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

Lucy Resnick, owner of Dewberry Farm, is getting ready to put her wares on display at the Buttercup Christmas Market.  Her best friend Quinn is helping her bundle mistletoe and cedar swags, and they are pleasantly enjoying each others' company when they hear gunshots.  Looking out Lucy's window, they see someone aiming toward them, then another shot takes the person down.  After calling police, they have a couple of theories -- was it one of the treasure hunters that believe an old story?  Or someone from the Lemmon farm across the creek?

When they have their answer, Lucy is determined to investigate.  Along with her boyfriend, veterinarian Tobias, she's looking for clues -- and might just have found the one she needed...

I usually try to read Christmas tales around the holiday, and while I don't normally read short stories (not enough character development, in my opinion), I've read the Dewberry Farm series, so I already know the people.

This story shouldn't take anyone more than an hour or so to read, and it was very interesting.  While things are progressing quickly, we get to see Lucy's new neighbor, and how everything comes together.  It's a decent mini-mystery in the cozy genre, and worth reading.  It can be read as a stand-alone, but I enjoyed it more because I knew the characters.  Recommended.

It's Halloween in Buttercup, Texas, and reporter-turned-farmer Lucy Resnick is up to her ears in more than goats and wayward cows.  Not only has her well dried up, but it turns out the old house Lucy recently moved to the farm has a reputation for spooks...and they are disturbingly active.  Then a tarot card reading at a local mead winery foretells death...and minutes later, exotic game ranch owner Bug Wharton goes belly-up.  Cause of death?  Murder, by a fatal dose of bee venom.

When the dimwitted sheriff fingers local witch and mead winery owner Serafine Alexandre, Lucy gets involved...and soon discovers that all kinds of things are brewing in Buttercup.

And some of them are deadly.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

Lucy Resnick used to be an investigative reporter in Houston, Texas, but moved to the small town of Buttercup and purchased her grandmother's old farm and now has a new life.  Unfortunately, that new life isn't without problems.  Fraught with a well run dry, an old small historical home on her property that may be haunted, and the idea of a mythical creature called a Chupacabra killing livestock, she takes a break to attend a Halloween gathering at a local mead winery run by a new friend., Seraphine, who's also reputed to be a witch.

But shortly after someone predicts death, Seraphine and exotic game ranch owner Bug Wharton have words, after which his brother runs in stating Bug is dying -- and they discover that he's been bitten by a bee, which he's allergic to.  When it's discovered Bug has been murdered, the sheriff -- who's known to take the easy way out -- arrests Seraphine for the murder.  But Lucy and her friends have other ideas, and Lucy sets about finding a killer.  Now all she has to do is try and stay under the radar...

This is the third book in the series and I really enjoyed the first two.  Having a penchant for "reading the season," as it were, I wanted to read this because it takes place at Halloween.  However, it has very little to do with Halloween, and the holiday is really only mentioned in passing.  Just sayin'

Anyway, Lucy has a lot of troubles this time out, but spends most of her time trying to solve the murder instead of thinking of ways to save her farm, more or less depending on friends to help.  Which is fine and dandy, but you'd think she would have known how much it really takes to run a farm, and had more savings than she did.  What is she going to do if there is another problem?  Maybe she can write articles online for a newspaper or something to make extra money...

Anyway, once Lucy starts investigating, she enlists the help of her beau, veterinarian Tobias, and together they discover things they'd rather not; and when a local farmhand is attacked, they know that they're getting closer to the truth.

When the ending comes and the killer is revealed, I pretty much had it figured out by this point; it was just waiting to see how Lucy put it together that finished it.  However, the ending was done nicely and I will continue to read this series.

Lucy Resnick's nerves are as tight as a tea cozy.  Her new goats, Hot Lips and Gidget, keep making a break for the town square, her truck is dying, and her boyfriend's gorgeous ex-wife is in town for the holidays.  Worse, someone's digging holes on her land...and uprooting her peach orchard and dewberry patch in the process.  Lucy needs additional holiday stress like she needs a blow to the head -- which she receives one night, courtesy of the mystery digger.

When the dim-witted sheriff arrests one of Lucy's best friends, the former reporter puts her own problems on the back burner and starts investigating.  What she finds is a patchwork of clues -- an injured puppy, a sapphire necklace gone missing, and a string of poison-pen letters -- that draws her deep into a web of small-town secrets.

Word travels fast in Buttercup.  When the killer learns Lucy's on the trail, Lucy finds she needs more than her reporting skills to save her friend -- she needs a Christmas miracle.

✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽

Lucy Resnick is an ex-investigative reporter who moved to her late grandmother's farm in Buttercup, Texas.  She's struggling to make ends meet, and doesn't know if her truck will make it through the winter.  But she's doing her best, and determined to make something of her farm.  While in bed one night, her poodle Chuck starts barking and won't stop.  Lucy hears noises outside, and goes to investigate, armed only with a hoe.  But she trips and is hit over the head, awaking two hours later.

The next morning, she goes to pick up two goats from her friend Peter, and while there, they see smoke in the distance.  When they go to see what's happening, a home is on fire.  Peter, a volunteer fireman, tells Lucy to call 911 -- and runs inside to see if anyone is home.  He comes out with a young woman, and then once again with a black puppy.  The woman is Krystal, a waitress for her friend Quinn, and it appears she was dead when the fire started.

When people are questioned about who wanted Krystal dead, the first person thought of is Lucy's friend Molly, who had an argument with her about Molly's daughter Brittney.  Now Molly is in jail for murder, Lucy's trying to keep her goats penned, her parents have come for Christmas, and she finds out her boyfriend, local veterinarian Tobias's ex-wife Mindy is in town.  Not an auspicious start for a memorable Christmas, but if she doesn't find the real killer, Molly isn't going to be celebrating it at all...

I read the first in this series and really enjoyed it.  But with the beginning of this book, I wasn't sure how the rest of the book would go.  It seems there are times when Lucy is Too Stupid to Live.  She hears someone outside, doesn't own a gun (stupid of her living in Texas and in the country, to boot), and decides to investigate - in the dark - armed only with a hoe.  Then she trips and gets hit over the head, knocking her out.  Did I mention she was wearing only pajamas and a robe?  In winter?  And was out for two hours?  When she wakes, she's not even cold.  My family's from Texas, and it gets chilly in the middle of the night there, though not frigid.  Then, she doesn't even call the sheriff because she 'knows he won't do anything.'  Say what?  I don't care if he hates her.  She was knocked out on her own land.  The sheriff needs to investigate.

Why is this man sheriff anyway?  He doesn't know his job, and when he arrests someone, it's for his convenience, not because they're guilty.  Why isn't anyone running against him?  Why isn't he removed from his position?  I rarely hate the 'evil nemesis' enough to want to see them done in, but I sure hope in the next book he's the victim; having someone this detestable and worthless in the book just nearly ruins it.

Now that I'm done with my rant - for the rest of the book, I thought the mystery was fine, and there were a few red herrings strewn about, which is always a nice thing.  While it didn't seem that Krystal had done anything to get herself murdered, the fact is that she was, and Lucy is trying to figure out who not only killed her, but committed arson to hide the crime.  Obviously, the horrible sheriff isn't going to do anything and would rather send an innocent woman to prison, but at least Lucy has help from her friend Quinn, who has a few ideas of her own.

I do like Lucy's parents, and would hope to see more of them in future books.  Her dad indulges her, and her mom's a softy, although she doesn't want anyone to know that.  Lucy's lucky to have them.  While there aren't a lot of descriptions of the farm nor the surrounding countryside, we may forgive that because there was plenty of action in this story, with everything occurring at the same time.

When the ending comes and the murderer is revealed, it's a bit of a surprise, but there are clues leading up to it, though as I mentioned before, the red herrings move things in other directions.  When everything is said and done, aside from Sheriff Do-Nothing, the book was very good and I will read the next in the series.  Recommended.

Five Stars

When Houston reporter Lucy Resnick cashes in her retirement to buy her grandmother's farm in Buttercup, Texas, she's looking forward to a simple life as a homesteader.  But Lucy has barely finished putting up her first batch of Killer Dewberry Jam when an oil exploration truck rolls up to the farm and announces plans to replace her broccoli patch with an oil derrick.  Two days later, Nettie Kocurek, the woman who ordered the drilling, turns up dead at the Founders' Day Festival with a bratwurst skewer through her heart and one of Lucy's jam jars beside her...and the sheriff fingers Lucy as the prime suspect.

Horrified, Lucy begins to talk to Nettie's neighbors, but the more she gets to know the townspeople, the more she realizes she's not the only one who had a beef with Nettie.  Can she clear her name, or will her dream life turn into a nightmare?

********

Lucy Resnick has recently purchased her grandmother's farm from Nettie Kocurek, who bought it fifteen years ago.  Just as she's settling in, an oil exploration truck shows up and tells her that although she bought the land, she didn't buy the mineral rights and Nettie still owns them...and has ordered the drilling, which could destroy Lucy's farm.  And even though they tell her they'll repair any damage, the short term devastation could ruin her financially.  So Lucy confronts Nettie at the Founders' Day Festival, but Nettie ignores her and turns up dead later that day, a portion of one of Lucy's jam jars found next to her.  Unfortunately, Lucy has two things against her:  Nettie's nephew is the sheriff, and she's a newcomer, so he's decided she's the killer, but can't prove it - yet.

Lucy knows she didn't kill Nettie, but hasn't any idea who did, and sets out to find the real killer since it appears she isn't getting any help from the sheriff's department.  Along the way she compiles her own list of suspects, which could be anyone, and it seems everyone in town had a reason to hate Nettie, including her own daughter.  As Lucy gets closer to finding the killer, she also gets closer to putting herself in the running as prime candidate of Nettie's killer.

Along with trying to solve the murder, Lucy is beginning to have feelings for the town's veterinarian, Tobias, and noticing that other strange things are happening - farm animals taking ill, farm equipment damaged - among other things, and Lucy stumbles into something that could cost her not only her farm, but also her life.

Which gives us an intriguing mystery.  And this book gives me what I like best:  an old mystery cradled inside a new one.  For within the mystery of who killed Nettie, we find an even older mystery that reveals itself to Lucy piece by piece; one that connects Lucy's grandparents to Nettie's parents and grandparents, and Nettie herself; a mystery that has been unsolved for years without any clues.

This is what truly makes this book outstanding.  Ms. MacInerney has given us a tale of greed, love, hatred and revenge that is truly a compelling read, one that is put together seamlessly with the pieces meshing perfectly.  I hope this series goes on for a very long time.  Highly recommended.
