Lucy thought she had finally been accepted in the small town of Ivy Creek and gained some new clients...
If only she knew it'd lead to a new set of heartaches and nightmares...
Plus murder!
✽✽✽✽✽✽✽✽
Lucy's just starting to make a go of the bakery she's reopened after her parents' sudden death, and is finally making money when the wife of a wealthy businessman, Becky Anderson, approaches her about creating the desserts for a charity party she's giving. While hesitant, it's pointed out to her that while everything she creates will be free of cost, it will mean more business for her, so she accepts. During the party, she's given a business card from a Mr. Wilson, who wants her to cater his wife's seventy-fifth birthday. But when the couple die the next day, apparently from food poisoning, her desserts are the first 'suspect' anyone thinks about.
So once again, Lucy's baking is suspected of killing someone, and she has to prove herself innocent, since the deputy sheriff, Taylor, isn't giving her information. And if she doesn't figure it out soon, she might not just lose her business, but also her life...
While these are short (1-2 hour) mysteries, I do like most of the characters that enter into the book. I would still like to know why Taylor dislikes Lucy so much, but you can't expect everything in a short book. Still, there were several suspects, and little clues, so we had to figure it out along with Lucy.
Her Aunt Tricia has her back and is helping her with questions, including the Wilsons' two sons, who are very different. But unexpectedly, things take a turn and Lucy discovers that she might have her eyes on the wrong person all along. The only thing that bothered me is the fickleness of the people in town. You'd think after eating her baked goods, at least there would be enough people to have trust in her and continue to purchase her items, considering no one else from the party was made ill.
All in all, a quick mystery to solve and characters that I hope will evolve with future books; I will continue to read this series and look forward to the next book. Recommended.
